Blue Eyeliner for Brown Eyes. Spring 2013 Trend: Dior, MAC, and Urban Decay Eyeliners Review

Lately, I have been obsessed with blue eyeliners. Bright blue and green eyeliners are one of makeup trends for Spring 2013 and were seen on the Stella McCartney, Dior, Moschino, Michael Kors, and Kenzo (amongst others) catwalks during the recent Fashion Week season.

I particularly enjoy this trend as dark blue, navy, purple and violet are some of the colours recommended for girls with brown or hazel eyes. While, personally, I find blue eyeshadows a bit much and reminiscent of the 60s ‘blue eyes, bright red lip’ look, blue eyeliner can really bring out your eyes.

I had a couple of bluish eyeliners over the years. For example, one of my favourite ones was Skin Food (Korean brand), in Eggplant. Recently I acquired 3 new eyeliners and have been wearing them every single day alone or in combination. During my recent trip to Lapland I spend 4h at one of London’s airports, curtsey of Norwegian airline and the fog in Oslo. I was looking for a blue eyeliner and must have swatched about 30 of them from different brands. I managed to narrow it down to two but in the end got both.

Dior

It a Dior Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in shade 254 Captivating Blue and it’s my first ever Dior eyeliner. I’m in love with Dior at the moment. It’s a rich deep navy blue completely matte eyeliner. In terms of the formula, it’s not as soft as the Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliners, which is actually a good thing. I find it much easier to get a thin, precise line with this product. It goes on like a dream and is a perfect blue eyeliner: it’s dark enough to actually work as an eyeliner but light enough to still look blue on the eyelid and contrast with brown eyes. This stays on all day and doesn’t budge. It’s a great product and I just love that it came with its own sharpener!

MAC

I’ve been after a jade eyeliner for a while. I will do a tuto on the look that inspired me in the first place next week. I found this MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil eyeliner in So There Jade and can’t get enough of it. I particularly enjoy wearing it on the lower lid. MAC eyeliners are really pigmented and soft. I find it quite difficult to get a thin line with it which is why I prefer to wear it on the lower lid. It’s waterproof and long-wearing. The colour is so beautiful and it just brightens up your entire face.

I’m really glad I got both eyeliners and as you can see on the photo above I’ve been wearing them together with the Dior one on the upper lid and MAC’s one on the lower lid. I find that the contrast between the two colours works really nicely and I got a lot of compliments on this look from my male friends, which doesn’t happen that often. This is actually a really wearable everyday look, especially if combined with simple nude matte eyeshadows. It’s an accent of colour that gives your eyes that extra umph.

Urban Decay

I got the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil in Ransom before I got the other two and am kind of regretting this purchase as I don’t wear it as much. Ransom is a bright iridescent purple, violet blue. I was a big fan of the 24/7 pencils for years. Yet, I find that they are too soft to achieve a clean precise line. They go on in a thick line and are not as elegant as the Dior one. They do stay on for hours but I’m kind of over them at the moment.

Overall, I love the Dior blue and MAC jade eyeliners and the blue eyeliner trend. I can’t get enough of this.

Dior: £18, at the moment on sale at Debenhams for £16.20 (for example here)

MAC: £14

Urban Decay: £14 (for example here)

Loving the pretty shade of jade from MAC and the combination you’ve used is a good one. Doubt I’ll be able to pull off this look with these colors. 😉

Thanks! I really like the combination too. I never wore colourful eyeliner before. But these ones work. I was also surprised but it’s actually a wearable look.

Yeah, it sure is a wearable look, I agree! I did try it a while back but with purples and greens, they seem subtler against my skin tone. But the blue does look good on you! 🙂

The Dior liner looks fab. I’m a big fan of blue liners as well, it makes my hazel eyes impossibly green.

Thanks. I was really surprised by how much I liked the Dior one. I always thought with Dior or Chanel makeup products you were paying mostly for the name. But this is a great product. Probably my favourite eyeliner formula ever. Let me know if you decide to go for this look 🙂
