Konjac : a Japanese speciality
I first discovered konnyaku plant when I lived in Japan. Its beneficial properties have been known in Asia for over 1500 years! It’s most commonly consumed in the form of a dark gray jelly and it’s one of those Japanese foods that you know are really good for you but offer very little in terms of taste. Konnyaku contains a number of vitamins and minerals and almost no calories (good when you’re on a diet). It is also commonly used in beauty treatments in Japan. And that in itself is a great recommendation! The Japanese women are positively obsessed with high-performing skincare and products that prevent skin damage and aging. According to my dermatologist friend the Japanese have the healthiest skin in the world.
Konjac sponges are brilliant little things made entirely from konnyaku natural fibers. They gently cleanse and exfoliate the skin and stimulate blood circulation. The fiber has natural antibacterial properties and balances the skins’ pH levels. These sponges can help with acne-prone skin but at the same time are suitable for those with delicate, sensitive skin.
How they work ?
I’m currently on my fourth sponge and am loving the effects. They have replaced facial scrubs in my daily routine. They are gentle so I am not afraid to use them twice a day, 7 days a week. They remove all impurities and dead cells from the skin. Over time I noticed that my skin is smother and healthier. It has this ‘holiday’ glow to it. I also noticed that they helped to reduced dry patches on my cheeks. I have very oily skin but whenever I exfoliate or mattify it I get dry patches around my mouth and nose. Konjac sponges balance my skin and as a result I have less acne breakouts. I haven’t tried the Clarisonic facial system but I expect it is in the same group of products.
I use sponges from the Konjac Sponge Company (there is a couple of brands that sell them in Europe): French Green Clay sponge for normal to oil skin and the Nourishing Mineral Rich French Pink Clay for tired and devitalised skin. Although the instructions say you can use them instead of a cleanser, I used them after. I remove make up with a wipe and clean my face with REN ClearCalm 3 Clarifying Clay Cleanser. I wet the sponge and gently massage my face with it in circular motions. It makes a funny squishy sound and leaves the skin feeling extra clean and smooth.
Where to find them ?
One of the best things about konjac sponges is their price: £6.5. One sponge will last you 2 or 3 months when used twice a day.
The Konjac Sponge Company has an online shop. You can also buy the sponges from a number of stores across the UK. For example, London Liberty has them up on the 3rd floor in the bath section. For a full stockists list see here.
Last month The Konjac Sponge Company released a body konjac sponge and I just can’t wait to get my hands on it.
